1. Diligenta - Pearl, NPI and London Life

The Background

Pearl, NPI and London Life have been established as major Insurance Companies for as long as 140 years. In the UK, there are almost 70 "closed" life funds with a value of more than £190 billion, which amounts to approximately one fifth of the long term insurance sector.

In October 2005 a company called Diligenta was formed to run the Life and Pensions operations for Pearl Group, including the transfer of over 1,000 staff and management of over 4,000,000 policies, making it one of the largest Life and Pension outsourcing companies in the UK.

The Challenge

Pearl had reduced their operations over a number of years, which was mainly the result of moving to a "closed-book" business. Legacy contracts in many areas of the business meant that Pearl needed to consolidate services across 11 specific areas and implement a solution to save money, which did not detriment the support of the business in any way. In 2004 a tender was released, which MBA won.

Our Solution

MBA transferred 29 people under TUPE, closed a printing and mailing operation in Peterborough, with some of the services being relocated to MBA's bureau in North London. Also, MBA set up an on-site mailroom and messenger facility in The Pearl Centre to provide further consolidation and utilise space more effectively. This has all been implemented in aggressive timescales with strict FSA requirements considered, including risk assessments, audits, resilience and contingency.

The specific service areas, included in MBA's contract are:

Mainframe Printing, enclosing and mailing of all outbound mail
Production and management of all corporate and marketing print
Print design and repro
Stock management, pick and pack services
Inbound mail sortation and distribution
Photocopier fleet management
Stationery supply
Management of all confidential waste
Microfilm production management
Porterage

Benefits

Since contract award in October of 2004, MBA have employed a proactive and consultative approach to the requirements of the customer and have saved over £900,000 per annum. By offering a complete service and providing a resilient, high-quality offering, MBA have enabled Diligenta to concentrate on other operational needs of their business.

Graham Smith, Marketing Manager at MBA, is delighted with the award. "We wanted to use a vehicle that would demonstrate the benefits of variable content on large print runs, which is where our data team and the 980 really score".

MBA fought off stiff competition with an incredible number of entries from over 19 different countries. The award was presented in front of an international audience at the Premier Partnership Congress held in Manchester on 17 May 2010.
